The rolls are shipped to a printing plate manufacturer who uncoils, etches, cleans, and then dries them before sending it to a commercial printer.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">Let&#8217;s take a look at each of the steps.\u00a0 There are 3 stages to the manufacture of printing plates: Mining, production and prepress.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;\"><b>STAGE 1 &#8211; MINING<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><b>1. Bauxite<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Making printing plates starts with bauxite.\u00a0 It exists around the belt of the equator and is mined and sent to refineries.\u00a0 Aluminum is in bauxite. Then a clarification takes place where impurities like mud are allowed to settle in a tank. Uncoiler<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; The aluminum roll is mounted on the plate making machine to process the printing plates.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><b>2. Etching\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; Aluminum will oxidize when it comes in contact with the air and this layer of oxide must be removed. Etching removes it.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><b>3. Cleaning\u00a0<\/b>&#8211; The surface now undergoes a cleaning to prepare for graining.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><b>4. Graining<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; This is an electronic process whereby the surface of the aluminum is &#8220;roughened&#8221; to increase it&#8217;s surface area.\u00a0 This allows the plate to be more hydrophyllic, or water loving.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><b>5. Drying<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Following the graining, the wet surface must be dried in order to be anodized.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><b>6. Anodizing<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; The aluminum sheet is now extremely sensitive to oxidation and breakdown. Too sensitive to go on a printing press.\u00a0 Anodization will now improve the durability of the plate, making it more resistant to corrosion and wear on press.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: arial;\"><b>7. Coating and drying<\/b>\u00a0&#8211; Once again, another process seeks make the plate sealed even further, and provide the base for a coating to be etched onto the plate when it receives and image for the printing press.\u00a0 This process shown in the diagram below continues inline with the one above. Customizing size for the printer<\/b>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0The process continues as shown in the diagram below to cut the aluminum according to size ordered by printers.\u00a0 The edge trimming and crosscutting can be made custom according to the printing press cylinder circumference.
